The famous "Moeller Technique" with Claus Hessler

The "Moeller Technique" is a stick technique named after Sanford Augustus "Gus" Moeller. Moeller was an American drummer and educator for 50 years until his death in 1960. But although the technique is named after him, he is not the inventor of it. He observed military drummers because he admired the way they played their snares at military events for hours without getting exhausted. He analyzed their playing technique and discovered that the players used the physics of the sticks by utilizing their natural rebound.

This was a more natural and relaxed playing to save the energy of the drummers. Jim Chapin, an influential jazz drummer of the former century, became a student of Moeller, popularized this drum technique together with him and after Moeller's death in self-management until his own death in 2009. Chapin taught his students this kind of smooth drumming in the same way he had learned it from Moeller. One of his students was Claus Hessler, the instructor of our three courses about this topic.

In this course series Claus Hessler demystifies the Moeller Technique since there are tons of confusing and conflicting information about this technique. Claus clears rumors. Since Claus was in very close contact with Jim Chapin until his death, he is now THE institution for the Moeller Technique and a more than worthy successor to teach it. Claus is one of the best drum educators in the world and besides the Moeller Technique he is a guru in open-handed playing, rudiments and an expert when it comes to drum history facts. We wish you as much joy with this new workout as we had during the production process!
